PPG Formula Lookup and Microsoft VistaThe PPG Formula Lookup application can be configured to run under Microsoft Vista. There are some issues during the install that you need to be aware of.
Also note that Vista is a rich and varied environment which can be configured in many way. Not all users will see all of the potential issues mentioned here.
This process has been tested on several version of vista, from Vista Home Basic to Vista Business.
First time Install and Upgrades1. Make sure you are logged in as a user with Administrator access.
2. Insert the PPG Paint Formula Lookup (PFL) CD. On most systems Windows will then try to run the menu by starting the ‘browsercall’ program. If a message pops up about this then choose NOT to run this, but open the CD up in Microsoft Explorer instead to see the files.
3. If the browsercall menu program does start automatically you may get an error. By default Vista will not run the help file included in the CD.
4. Once you have opened the CD folder using Windows Explorer open up the ‘Disk1’ folder (by double-clicking).
Then run(by double-clicking) the SETUP.EXE file.
5. Vista will prompt you with a security question, click CONTINUE to start he installation.
6. Follow the screen prompts to start the PFL install.
7. Restart the computer when prompted after the install has completed.
8. If you have previously been running PFL on this computer before, then that it. The upgrade has been completed.
Additional once-only first time configuration settings If this is the first time this program has been installed on this PC you need to do some initial additional steps to get everything to run.
1. After the restart, the PFL program will try to run automatically. You may then see an Database error message.
Press OK to get rid of the message, and also any subsequent messages.
2. To fix this error go to Start, then Control Panel. Choose the Additional Options icon, then the “DBE Administrator” icon.
3. Once you have the BDE Administrator running, navigate to the “Configuration” tab, and expand the Configuration>>Drivers>>Native>>Paradox section.
4. Edit the NET DIR setting from C:\ to C:\PFL
5. Exit and Save.
6. If the PC seems to freeze at this point, it may be because Vista is trying to save this using normal permissions. If this occurs, restart the computer and try again. The next time you run BDE Administrator, Vista will ask for permission to run this as an Administrator. Do steps 4,5 and 6 again. You should be able to save correctly now.
The PPG Formula Lookup program should now run without any problems.
Fist time users may also get an error about MSCOMCTL.OCX when running the Product Data Sheet or MSDS lookup programs this may be due to ActiveX Installer Service not be enabled.
To fix this error, go to the menu and open a CMD prompt by running as administrator.
Do this by clicking the Start button >>All Programs>>Accessories, and right-clicking on Command prompt and choosing Run As administrator.
Then type:
regsvr32 MSCOMCTL.OCX
You should see a message saying that the control has been successfully registered. Close the command prompt window.
The PPG MSDS viewer and the PPG Data Sheet viewer will now work correctly.
Note to view datasheets, a program to read PDF files must be installed. If required, an installation of Adobe Acrobat 4 is included on the CD. To install, double click the ar405end program on the CD.
